Yesterday we had a customer bring his Mazda SPEED3 in to replace his off-the-shelf Cobb Accessport tune with a Forged Performance Custom Dyno Tune. The owner had some modifications already installed and decided it was time to maximize the potential of his existing aftermarket performance upgrades. While Cobb’s stock tunes are far superior quality to Mazda’s stock tune they still leave plenty of room for improvement in the power department. We were able to extract an additional 25whp and while maintaining a safe, reliable tune and even improving the driveability. Here is a quick run down of the parts this MS3 came to us with:
• Mazdaspeed Intake
• Upgraded Top Mount IC
• ATP Downpipe
• Mazdaspeed Catback Exhaust
• Cobb Accessport
As many of you know, the MS3 uses the latest direct injection technology which requires about 1600psi of fuel pressure at the rail instead of the 50-70psi of fuel pressure in a conventional injected engine. Because the customer hasn’t yet upgraded to an upgraded HPFP, Sharif, our in house tuning expert, was only able to safely raise the boost about 2psi. Anything more, and the rail pressure would drop to a dangerous level resulting in a lean condition and potential engine damage. In the future, the customer will have the upgraded pump installed so we can extract all the power left from the turbocharger and engine. Despite this, he still picked up some terrific power and torque throughout the entire power band.
