All posts for the month November, 2012

This past weekend, the Forged Perfomance team made a visit to Road Atlanta for some private coaching with World Challenge Pro Driver, Mike Skeen. With a half dozen customer GT-R’s present, we invited Mike Skeen to do some one-on-one coaching with some of our advanced drivers. On fairly short notice, we asked Mike to make a few laps in the Catesby/Forged FP800 GT-R shod with Hoosier R100 slicks for some demonstration laps. This is almost identical to the setup we ran in OLOA 2012, aside from swapping out the PSS’s for Hoosiers and a few minor adjustments. Chin Motorsports was kind enough to block off 10 minutes on Sunday afternoon for some exclusive track time so we could put on the show.

With the event haulted and the track cleared of all cars, a few dozen spectators lined the fences to watch Mike rip off a series of three blastering laps with the fast lap checking in at 1:24.700, obliterating the previous record by 3 full seconds! In reviewing the data, there is still plenty more time to be had with some additional tweaking and adjustments, but overall we are very happy with the results and Mike drove the wheels off the car. I am very proud of the entire Forged team. Consistent success requires a concentrated team effort, and that’s what we had this weekend.

Stay tuned for video and photos….we have over 25GB of media to sort through. :)

For now, here is some quick in-car footage

We just received this beautiful piece of artwork from Killer B Motorsports, they call this their “Holy Header”. It is without a doubt one of the nicest headers I have ever seen for the Subaru Boxer Engine. It was developed using state of the art CAD software & simulations to determine optimal design to increase power in the mid to high RPM range. Short as possible primaries with a single secondary significantly decrease header volume allowing exhaust gas pressure to build quickly. Symmetrical 4-1 design maintains high and consistent exhaust velocity as RPMs rise. You can expect faster spool up time compared to long primary/double secondary designs. A difference you will immediately notice in throttle response and the ability to hold more power higher into the revs.

Features include:

· Short Equal Length Primaries. The shortest possible length primaries you can have on an Equal Length header. Short means less header volume and quick spool up.

· Symmetrical Primary Design. All primaries have a similar tube length AND bend geometry. This keeps the pulse velocities high and consistent compared to equal length headers with different (non-symmetrical) primary tubing geometry.

· Smooth Mandrel Bends. All of the bends utilize a mandrel for smooth non-restrictive flow. Not only that, we use the largest bends possible at every location. It would be cheaper to use 2” bends everywhere, like others do, but that’s not going to give the best performance.

· Thick Walled 321 Stainless Steel Construction for Long Life. 321 is alloyed with titanium, costs more, a lot more, but it’s the ideal material for high temperature turbocharged applications. Would 304 stainless work, yes, but the temperatures on our turbocharged cars can exceed the limits of 304 stainless enough to make them brittle and crack. 321 stainless steel has higher strength and toughness at elevated temperatures. It was developed by the aircraft industry specifically to address 304 stainless manifolds that were cracking. Killer B Motorsport is the only company that manufactures full 321 headers.

· High Heat Retention. 321 stainless steel conducts less heat than 304 stainless steel. The short primaries and properly sized secondaries also pull less heat from the exhaust gasses increasing turbine efficiency. Large tubing headers expose the exhaust gasses to more surface area transmitting more heat and reducing exhaust energy. You can also ceramic coat or wrap our headers (and keep the warranty) without exceeding the temperature range like you can with 304 stainless.

· V-Band Up-Pipe Connection. Why V-Band? Fast, easy, no gasket, no leaks, perfectly concentric alignment of tubes for no disruption of flow, what’s not to like!

· Up-Pipe included. Of course it comes with an Up-Pipe! This header was designed as a complete system. Using other up-pipes would only compromise performance, and nobody wants that.

· Weights only 17 pounds (vs. OEM weights 25 pounds)

· Works with OEM EJ25 Oil Pans, and Killer B Motorsport Performance Aluminum Oil Pan!

· Made in the USA and Killer B quality!

A long time client and friend of ours recently decided while he certainly enjoyed doing HPDE track events in his GT-R, he felt the desire for some real competition where he could do battle against other drivers on a level playing field. The choice was made to pick up an inexpensive BMW 3 Series for the ultra-competitive NASA Spec E30 Class. The biggest concern when it came to building a car for wheel-to-wheel racing is driver safety. This is an area where things must be done the right way, the first time. That is why we were trusted in the fabrication of this custom roll cage. With many years of competitive motorsports experience and an extremely talented fabrication department we were more than capable of taking on this assignment. Because fabrication and machining work requests ample amounts of open shop space, we invested in a second building last year just five minutes down the road from our main location. The team went to work designing a 6-point cage that would not only stiffen up this 20+ year old chassis but keep its the driver safe should this spec E30 trade a little more than paint. This cage was built using 1.75″ DOM .095 inch wall roll cage tubing and was built within the very rigid constraints of NASA’s Spec E30 Class. NASCAR style door bars further protect the driver by keeping more spacial separation between door bar and driver. We have quite a bit more finish work to do on the cage, but we wanted to share some of our progress thus far.

While we are known for the Nissan GT-R and other high performance late model imports our fabrication department has the skill, knowledge and experience to assist you in any track day or competitive race car builds.

Enjoy the photos and see you trackside!

Today we just wrapped up the install of these stunning Matte Black Advan RZ-DF’s on a clients track day 2012 Black Edition GT-R. As soon as I saw the car I just had to grab my camera and snap some photos of this combination, which I had yet to see.

Specs are:

Front: 20 x 10 +35 with 295/35/20 Michelin Pilot Super Sport
Rear: 20 x 12 +20 with 335/30/20 Michelin Pilot Super Sport

This past weekend our friends at CHIN Motorsports made their inaugural visit to Atlanta Motorsports Park, which is the Southeast’s newest and most exclusive track. As always the Forged Performance Team showed up in full force with a handful of Forged prepped and tuned Nissan GT-R’s ready to lay down some hot laps. CHIN Motorsports provides a highly organized event with some of the Southeast’s nicest vehicles, with plenty of track time at our disposal we never miss one of their track events!

Enjoy a few photos from this past weekends event and make sure to join us as Forged Performance and CHIN Motorsports return to Road Atlanta Thanksgiving weekend! World Challenge star, Mike Skeen will be on hand to attempt a new track record in the OLOA Catesby/Forged FP800R GT-R! We already hold the street tire record, now its time to put down some laps on full slicks! You can join in the Facebook Event page: HERE

Check out Sharif@Forged in his 2013 Black Edition GT-R putting down a 1:28 hot lap with stock power level/boost! This is one interesting ride to say the least!
